9:30-11:00am What is Transformative Social Change?
This panel will set the context for the rest of the symposium by exploring the history of this emergent approach to social action. What is it? How has it emerged? Why is it important? How are you already involved?
11:15am-12:15pm Transformative Justice and Education
The purpose of this panel is to synthesize theories of transformative/restorative justice with its application in pedagogy and education. Specifically, how can we break down traditional systems of oppression through transformative approaches to education?
1:00-2:00pm Connecting Environmental Justice to Transformative Justice
This panel will focus on how environmental work connects with transformative justice, and will highlight the different strains of work being done both to resist environmental injustice and to build alternative communities/socio-ecological spaces.
2pm A performance by Raging Asian Women Taiko Drummers (RAW)
2:30-3:30pm Criminalizing the oppressed: Transformative perspectives on citizenship, belonging, and the prison.
This panel will explore the ways in which an expanding carceral state is being used to manage social and economic insecurity. How are people punished on the basis of their movement, race, status, gender conformity etc.
3:30-5:00pm Open Space activity: This facilitated open space will be an opportunity to contribute to, or lead a dialogue that will begin to translate theory into action.
9:00-11/ noon: Follow-up collaboration on action plans.
